Johann Michael Schoch, “Michael” (1734 to 1819) – 1st Generation

Of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A Reconstruction

German name – Johann Michael Schoch; also, Hans Michael Schoch.  Name used - “Michael Schoch.”   Hans is short version of Johann.  Wife is Margaretha.

Born possibly 21 February 1735 Lichtenau, Baden, German, with father named – Johannes Schoch and Mother – Margaretha Schoch.   However, Philadelphia records indicate Michael Schoch was born 1733 or 1734.

Immigrated to America 1749

Married 3 January 1758 to Margaretha Stoess - German Lutheran Church, Philadelphia.  Name listed as Stoess(in), but surname is “Stoss” or “Stoess.”    See the Stoess chapter.

Occupation reported to be Shoemaker, also called Cordwainer.

Died: 9 September 1819, reported as a church record.

Parents: Father - Johannes Schoch.  Mother – Margaretha __.

Surname is Schoch, but Shock, Shoch, Schock, and others appear.  Several problems: (1) Surname sometimes was pronounced and later changed to Schock or Shock.  (2) Poorly handwritten “k” and “h” sometimes appear similar in these records.

Book source: “Michael Schoch (1733-1819) of the Northern Liberties,” by Franklin Mousley, 1949, 175 pages; book not directly seen.     A copy is reported at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  A review is found in Gene Rook’s Genes-Ballentine Ancestors, 2010 at rootsweb.ancestry.com.  To find it, use Google and enter Mousley’s book title.

Problems with early Philadelphia German Church records: “(in)” is frequently used at the end of a female surname and frequently when a husband is not named.   Michael Hogan* indicates the “(in)” is sometimes attached to a female’s surname during these years.  In Germany, “en” sometimes were attached to the females surname and “er” to the male.   For this reason, consider “Stoessin” to be “Stoess.”    Also, marriages in Pennsylvania before 1885 usually weren’t recorded at court houses and came from church records, if they survived and can be found.

Researcher: James R. Murphy, planetmurphy.org.  Last revision 18 January 2017.

Wife - Maria Magdalena Stoess, “Margaret” (1740 - 1814+)

Used the name “Margaret,” but Magdalena also used several times by Philadelphia Church which appears wrong.

Surname variation: Stoess, Stoss with two dots above “o.”  See Stoess Chapter for more details.

Born: ~1740 from reported age 19 in 1759 St. Michael’s church record Philadelphia  Exact date is 27 May 1740 as Maria Margaretha Stoss per Lichtenau, Baden birth record.

Immigrated 1752

Parents: Johannes Stoess (~1700  to >1764) + Catharina Schoch, daughter of Michael Schoch).

Brothers/Sisters: Jacob Stoess (1728), Maria Salome Stoess (~1740), Christina Stoess.

German Records

(consider) 1735 February 21 – Lichtenau, Baden, Germany: Birth of Johann Michael Schoch.  Father Johannes Schoch.  Mother Margaretha Schoch.   Baptism two days later.

Index states 1734, but original parish record clearly states 1735.  Problem with 1735 is that Philadephia church records indicate his birth date closer to 1733.    So do we have the right person?  There is another listing for” Joh. Michael Schoch,” same dates, same parent’s names, but event parish is Scherzheim Muckenschoft, Baden with no reference page.    Scherzheim and Muckenschoft are now part of the city of Lichtenau.  By 1739, this family is clearly in Muckenschoft with the birth of Margaretha Schoch.  Further research is needed to clarify the father - Johannes Schoch and his children.

Philadelphia County, Pa. Records for “Michael” Schoch (1734 to 1819) + Margaret Stoess

1755 November 30 – St. Michaels Lutheran Congregation, Philadelphia:  “Hans Mich. Schoch,” 6 & 23.  Six means number of years in country and 23 is his age.

“Pennsylvania and New Jersey Church and Town Records 1708-1985,” on ancestry.com

1756 - St. Michaels Lutheran Congregation, Philadelphia: Hans Mich. Schock, followed by unreadable comment.

1758 January 3 – Philadelphia County: German Lutheran Church Records:  Marriages by Pastor Handschuch, from Book 1: “3 January 1758, Hans Michael Schoch and Margaretha Stoess(in).  Witnesses: Jacob Stoess, Johann Friedrich Bach, Johannes Sommer, and others.”

“German Lutheran Church at Philadelphia Records” – St. Michaels and Zion records are combined, by Robert Hall and F. Edward Wright, 2004: From DCD106 Philadelphia German Church Records, Colonial Roots.  Most St. Michaels entries are from this book.

The Schochs used St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, established in 1743.  One report states the church stood at the northeast corner of 5th Street and Apple Tree Alley.    Apple Tree Alley no longer exists, but the church probably was northeast of today’s Philadelphia city center.

Northern Liberties became a township in 1771; a district in 1803, and was annexed by the City of Philadelphia in 1854.   A few records suggest it became part of Philadelphia City earlier. Location is north or northeast of the city center.

1759 - St. Michaels Lutheran Congregation, Philadelphia: (First Listing)

“Johann Michael Schoch” 9 ½ years in country, no children numbered, age 25 ½, and rest can’t read.  The following line has:

“Magdelena Schoch(in)” 6 ½ years in country, no children numbered, age 18 ½; followed by Johannes __ __ __ daughter.

There is a second church listing in 1759:

“Johann Michael Schoch,” 10 years in county, age 26, and rest unreadable.  Following line is:

“Magdelena Schochin, 7 years in county, 1 child (number shared between Michael and Magdelena), and age 19.  Adjacent to her name is “Stoess…_...Frankford.”

“Pennsylvania and New Jersey Church and Town Records 1708-1985,” on ancestry.com   Has original photostats of St. Michael’s Parish congregation from 1755.

Suddenly, Margaret’s name becomes Magdelena.  These Philadelphia records indicate Magdelena Schoch was born in or very close to the year 1740.   There is a Lichtenau, Baden, Germany birth record for a Maria Magdalena Stoss; Father - Georg Stoss and Mother – Anna Catharina Stoss.  This Maria Magdalena Stoss was born 27 October 1733 and baptized 29 October 1733.  It appears the Philadelphia Church got Margaret’s name wrong.

1760 - St. Michaels Lutheran Congregation, Philadelphia:

Johann Michael Schoch, 10 ¾, age 27, __ Franckfurt or Franckford & rest unreadable.  Following line is:

Magdalena Schochin, 7 ¾, 1 child (number shared between Michael and Magdelena), age 20.

1763 July 22 – Phila German Lutheran Church: Birth of Johann Georg., of Michael Stauch and Margaretha, b. 22  Juy 1763, bapt. 24 July 1763.  Sponsors: Michael Wolff and wife Margaretha.

1767 Philadelphia County, Northern Liberties – East tax: Michael Shoss, 3 hourses 2.13.4, 3 cows 1.0.0.

(possibly) 1769 Northern Liberties (East): “Michael Shouf,” 3 horses, 3 cows, tax 2.13.4

(possibly) 1774 Northern Liberties (East): “Michael Shoff”, 3 horses, 3 cows, tax 3.0.0

Pennsylvania Archives books are in printed form and the original handwriting cannot be reviewed.  However, this writer believes the “F” in Shouf and Shoff is a common but obsolete form of “F” which was used to denote a soft “s” or “ss.”    This would make Shouf = Shouss, and Shoff = Shoss.

1777 September to 1778 June: There is British turmoil and occupation of Philadelphia and suburbs.   At one time, British built military emplacements east-west through Northern Liberties.   During the Revolution, Northern Liberties housed military barracks for Philadelphia.   1779 tax list for Northern Liberties -East did not survive.

(questionable) 1793 October 13 – Phila. German Lutheran Churches: Died 13 October 1793 – Jacob Schoch.

This writer thinks the death record belongs here with elder Jacob Schoch, but is uncertain.  With Jacob Schoch dead before father’s 1814 will, this leaves five sons living that year as mentioned in the will.

(questionable - 1810 US Census of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia: Margret Shokes 1 male and 1 female 10-16, 1 female 45+

Children age 10-16 could be Margareta Schoch but the male is unknown, unless Joseph is twice listed on census records.

Children of Jacob Schoch and Margareta Sayler

(1). Margareta Schoch (4 September 1786)

(2). Michael Schoch (26 July 1789 to ~5 December 1792)

(3). Johannes Schoch (18 September 1793 to 18 June 1795)

(4). (questionably) Joseph Schoch^  (if he exists)

Mousley is the only source for this Joseph Schoch, but gives his birth date as 1 July 1786.  That can’t be since sister Margareta Schoch was born 4 September 1786.   Joseph’s birth date is now in question.  Mousley doesn’t mention any other brothers or sisters.  There’s another Joseph Schoch to add to the confusion who has a baptism 18 April 1784 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Germantown.  Parents were Andreas Schoch and wife Catharine.

(V). Henry Shoch (Henrich Schoch) 5 May 1766 to 1826 -  2nd Generation – son of Michael Schoch and Margaret Stoess.   Henry Schoch married Sarah Castor.

Born: 1766 May 5 - Philadelphia County: Henrich Schock, parents - Michael and Margareth Schoch.  Baptized 1766 at St Michael’s Zion – Philadelphia;

Given a middle initial “E” by Mousely, but can’t find an original source

Married Sarah Castor about early 1789

Occupation: noted as a farmer in 1820 census.

Died (reported) 11 February 1826 at Frankford, Philadelphia County, Pa. (from familysearch.org pedigree) and buried in Frankford Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery (per Mousely).  Grave stone marker reported to state: “Henry Schoch, departed life 11 February 1826 in the 60th year of his age.”

Will or estate administration: not yet found, Parents: Hans “Michael” Schoch and Margaretha Stoess.

Spelling: Schoch is most correct, but Shoch is commonly used in later years.  Also, Schock and Shock.

Beware that there are several other Henry Schochs (various spellings) who cause confusion.   One is Henry Schoch (1766 Pennsylvania to 1856 Pickaway County, Ohio).  Yes, his birth year is also 1766.  This Henry Schoch married Christina __ and has some Northumberland County, Pa records.    Another is Henry Schroch/Shock/Schoch (various spellings), a manufacturer, from Northern Liberties, Philadelphia County, Pa., who married Susan __.   Possibly this might be Capt. Henry Shouch, Philadelphia, in the War of 1812-1814.   There are also 3 different wills stating an “Elizabeth” married Henry Shoch – see end of this chapter.

Sarah Castor – wife of Henry Schoch (1766 to 1826)

Surname “Castor” is an American variation of “Gerster,” a Swiss name.

Born: 11 April 1771 per Germantown Reformed Church records

Died:

Parents: Jacob Gerster/Castor (1742 Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pa to 1815) + his 1st wife Sophia Rorer (April 1753 to 9 May 1796 per Germantown Reformed Church as Jacob Gerster) of Oxford Township, Philadelphia County; their marriage 10 January 1766 at Gloria Dei Church (“Old Swedes,” as” Jacob Caster” and “Sophy Bore”)

Grandparents: Johann or Hans George Gerster/Castor (1710 to 24 December 1797*) of Switzerland and his marriage to Eva __.     “George  Castor”  is buried at Frankford Presbyterian – gravestone  gives age as 87 years, 9 months, 3 weeks and 5 days implying his birthday was 28 March or 1 February 1710.*
