Overview for John Hogan “II” (ca1745 to 1798) and wife Elizabeth Penix

John Hogan “II” (ca1745 Virginia to 1798 Garrard Co., Kentucky) married 19 April 1781 in Louisa County, Virginia to Elizabeth Penax/Pinax (ca1750 to 1820 Garrard County or later).   A better spelling for Pinax is Penix.    Her last county tax record is 1811 and in 1820 she is possibly living with her son Lewis Hogan in Garrard County.   This is her last known record.

Determining this John Hogan’s parents has been a dilemma for many family historians.  But looking at his estimated birth date, whatever it may be, he was born at least ca1745.  That means his father could be estimated born: 1745 – 25 years age = 1720 or earlier.  That reduces the possible candidates in Goochland and Louisa Counties.   This researcher (J. Murphy) believes the best candidate to be John Hogan “I” (ca1715-20 to ca1784 or not known) who married Judith __ and lived in Louisa County, Virginia.  With better information, this could change.  The actual use of “I” and “II” are never found in records, but are used here for separation.

Douglas Register states “Jo. Hoggan” married on 19 April 1781 to “Eliz: Pinax,” “both of Louisa County.”   They are entered into the Douglas Register marriage records in the marriage section which was directly recorded by Rev. William Douglas.

“The Douglas Register” was kept by Rev. William Douglas from 1756 until near the time of his death in 1798.  Records covered birth, marriages, and deaths of St. James Northam Parish of Goochland County, Virginia and encompassed others with marriages and birthdates from nearby areas not directly handled by him.  The book is 412 pages long.  This researcher (J. Murphy) finds some errors whereby both marriage dates and birth/baptism dates sometimes are the same in the chapter of births and marriages NOT performed by Douglas.

John Hogan “II” migrated to Kentucky on or before 1795 and died in Garrard County on 6 August 1798.  His widow Elizabeth was left to raise their youngest children, including their newborn infant – Elihu Hogan.

      * These eight children names were repeated twice more again in the indenture.   Notice that the first time for the children, that only 5 were mentioned.  Why?  Possibly, the other three were not legal age to be named grantors.  Problem is Elihu Hogan appears to be the last born.  In the following tax records, The * continues to indicate our current subject Hogan and children.

Children of John Hogan, Jr. or “II” (ca1745 – 1797) and wife Elizabeth Penix:

(A-1). Lewis Hogan may not have married and no wife’s name has surfaced.   He was a witness to his father’s 1797 will.   Birth date is difficult to estimate and possibly is the oldest son.  In 1817, he applied for a tobacco warehouse on the Kentucky River on his own land, inherited from his father.  Cannot trace after 1821.

“Liberty Warehouse was located at the earlier site of John Hogan’s Landing and served the tobacco farmers of Mt. Hebron section of Garrard County.

Kentucky River Guidebook – Jessamine County, Kentucky River Task Force, jessamineco.com/river/guidebook5.htm

The location is uncertain, but if on his father/mother’s earlier 100 acres on the Kentucky River, is about 2 miles southeast of James Hogan’s Ferry which crossed the Kentucky River at Hickman Creek.  James Hogan’s Ferry is the same location where today’s Highway US-27 crosses the Kentucky River.   John Hogan’s land and Lewis Hogans’s warehouse should be at Kentucky River Lock 8.  DeLorme Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer shows a northern extension of Mt. Hebron Road which approaches from the south.

Zachariah Hogan married 1st on 9 August 1806 Garrard County, Kentucky to Delilah Marksberry, by consent of her father Samuel Marksberry (county record).   Marriage record consent suggests Delilah was underage (i.e. 1806 – 16 = born 1790).   Zach married 2nd on 4 December 1823 Grant County, Kentucky to Elizabeth Doty (county record).   Zachariah Hogan purchased 29 acres on Sugar Creek in 1812; same land that he and wife Delilah sold to Bailey Richardson on 21 September 1815.  Moved to Grant County, Kentucky where his wife Delilah died about 1821 and he married 2nd on 4 December 1823 Grant County, Kentucky to Elizabeth Doty (county record).   Zach died after 1840.

US Army, Register of Enlistments 1798 – 1914, 1828 Jan – 1835, ancestry.com – us army

Born 1794 in Bedford County, Virginia!   Wow…okay, but this is the wrong Zachariah Hogan and beware of this.   Our subject could not be Bedford County, Virginia’s Zachariah Hogan (born 1794 per US Army Enlistment record); i.e. our subject married 1806 – 1794 = age 12!   These Bedford County Hogans were Quakers for 60 years and can be found in their records.  Prior to Bedford County, the search for more Hogan Quaker records in Virginia’s northern counties has begun.

1836 May 2 – Adams County, Illinois:  Indenture - John W. McFadon off Adams County deeded to Zachariah Hogan of Adams County, Illinois for $168, NE1/4 of NW1/4 of Section 19, Township 2S, Range 7W of 4th Meridian.  Signed - Jno. McFadon.  Witness – Henry Asbury.  Entered 2 May 1836 (DB F/202, 367/766).

Apparently, they obtained a land patent/grant for the same 1836 land.   Land appears to be near the Adams County - Pike County, Illinois border, southwest of the landmark of Plainville, near or on Pigeon Creek.  The western boundary of Adams County is the Mississippi River and south of St. Louis, Missouri.

1840 US Census of Quincy, Adams County, Illinois: Zachariah Hogan, 1 male + 1 female 0-5, 1 male + 1 female 5-9, 1 female 30-39, 1 male 50-59.    Also, on 1840 State Census for Adams County.

(a3a). Overton P. Hogan (29 May 1808 to 5 October 1885 Grant Co. Ky., buried at Williamstown Cemetery, Grant Co. Ky. per findagrave.com) married about 1837 to Sarah Kendall (15 June 1815 to 20 December 1884, buried same cemetery), moved to Grant County, Kentucky.

He was a Judge in Grant County and began stage-coach lines to Covington and to Walton where the stage connected with a railroad line.*   Frequency used initials “O. P. Hogan.”  He was elected Senator to the Kentucky General Assembly and served with Senator Elihu Hogan in 1850.  He served a standing committee called County Courts.  He introduced a bill to amend the Charter of Lexington Covington Turnpike Road Company.

(a3b). Rev. William Hogan (10 March 1814 Kentucky to 6 September 1869 and buried Oroton Cemetery, Timewell, Brown Co., Illinois per findagrave.com), likely son of Zachariah Hogan.  Married 1835 Adams County to Nancy Norton (21 April 1817 to 31 December 1880, buried same cemetery)

1836 November 21 – Adams County, Illinois: Indenture - William Hogan and Nancy Hogan his wife of Adams County deeded to William Harrison of Adams County of Adams County for $280 in Adams County, NE1/4 of SW quarter, Section 8, Township 2S, range 7 West of 4th Meridian.  Signed – William Hogan, Nancy Hogan.   Nancy Hogan was examined separately and agrees to conveyance.  21 November 1836.   (DB H/90, 51/911)

Believe the above deed location is incorrect.  Should be NE1/4 of SW1/4, “Section 7,” Township 2S, Range 7 West. This would be the same section of land that Zachariah Hogan owned – see his listing. In fact, these coordinates in Section 7 are the ones listed for William Hogan in Bureau of Land Management, US Department of the Interior “BML-GLO” records online.   This land was patented to William Hogan 10 September 1840.  His land being so near Zachariah Hogan suggests a close relationship.  William Hogan also had two more land 1840 patents in Adams County, but in Section 4 instead of Section 7.

1840 US Census of Adams County, Illinois: William Hogan – 2 females 0-4, 1 male + 1 female 20-29.

The 1840 US Census of Adams County lists William Hogan with 2 females 0-5 and 1 male + 1 female 20-29.   This is not William Hogan, brother to Zachariah Hogan who would be older, but Zach’s son.

1850 US Census of Concord, Adams County, Illinois:

William Hogan 37 farmer, Ky; Nancy Hogan 34 Ky, Pauline Hogan 16 Ill, Mary Hogan 12 Ill, John Hogan 9 Ill, Elizabeth J. Hogan 5 Ill, James O. Hogan 1 Ill, Nancy Dans 54 Ky.

(a3c). Elizabeth Hogan married 24 March 1835 Grant County, Kentucky to Peter Ireland, with marriage bond by O.P. Hogan and Peter Ireland (county record).   Difficult to trace.

1840 US Census of Grant County, Kentucky: Peter Ireland – 1 male 0-4, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male + 1 female 30-39.

1843 March 11 – Grant County, Kentucky: Peter Ireland and George W. Hogan gave 8 March 1843 bond for the 11 March 1843 marriage of George W. Hogan to Sarah Ann Owen, performed by Wm. Myers (county record).

(a3d). George W. Hogan married 11 March 1843 Grant County, Kentucky to Sarah Ann Owen by Wm. Myers and bonded 8 March 1843 by Peter Ireland and George W. Hogan.  George Willis Hogan was born 1816 in Garrard County, Kentucky and died 15 February 1887 Jackson County, Missouri and buried Locust Creek Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Linn County, Missouri per findagrave.com).  After they married, children’s birth state census records show movements between Adams County, Illinois, back to Kentucky, before moving on to Missouri.

From a writeup on his son Stephen A. Douglas Hogan:  …”was a son of George W. Hogan, who settled in Adams County, Illinois, and followed the occupations of farmer and miller, operating both the saw mills, which were run by water power.  He moved to Knox County, Missouri, where he spent ten years then went to Chariton County, near Old Brunswick, and finally to Kansas City where he died.  For eight months he served in the State Militia of Missouri.  His wife, formerly Sarah Ann Owen, was a native of Washington, D.C. and a daughter of Edward Owen….  Mrs. Hogan died in in Linn County, Missouri, leaving a family of five sons and four daughters, on whom one son is deceased. “

Yes, there are three birth locations in the 1880 census for each person.  1st is the subject’s birth location; 2nd unnamed father’s birth location, and 3rd, mothers birth location.  The last two are generally found unreliable unless the family was into their own heritage. Yet, researchers find this useful.

(a3e). Possibility of other Zachariah Hogan children by 1st wife Delilah Marksberry.  Grant County, Kentucky records have the following Hogans, whose relationships are not understood.

(A-4). Sarah Hogan (born 1788/92), daughter of John Hogan “II” (ca1745 – 1798) and Elizabeth Penix.   From findagrave.com: Sarah Hogan (~1788/92 to 26 July 1866 Switzerland Co. Indiana) married Samuel Mennet (20 December 1779 to 1850) and lived in Switzerland County, Indiana.  One clue connecting these Hogans to Switzerland County, Indiana is a 15 September 1815 Switzerland County, Indiana Territory marriage of William Hogan to Mary Arnold (county record).  Another clue is Samuel Minette had lived earlier in Garrard County, Kentucky.  This Sarah Hogan is not the one who married Tobias Grider in 1800 Garrard County.  This last Sarah’s marriage record names William Hogan (as the father).

(A-5). John M. Hogan (16 July 1788 Goochland Co., Va., to 20 July 1865 Bible record*) married May 1831 to Margaret Ann Baker (born Feb. 4, 1811, formerly of Culpepper Co., Va.; died Jan. 23, 1885).   Transcriber Molly Hogan Gentry noted John M. Hogan (born July 16, 1788) in the War of 1812 was wounded in the Battle of the River Raisin; his brother William was Captain of his company in the Civil War and was killed in action.  Gentry may have been the one to add John M. Hogan was born in Goochland County, Virginia.   “Goochland” noted in this record is a key to placing this Hogan here.

Hogan.  Margaret Hogan’s widow’s pension application stated that her husband’s military company was “mostly cut up” at the Battle of River Raisin, Territory of Michigan (January 18-23, 1813).

(A-6). William Hogan (1790/95 to _?), son of John Hogan “II” + Elizabeth Penax.

“Captain William Hogan.”   This title comes with brother John M. Hogan’s history.  According to Molly Hogan Gentry, this William Hogan died as a Captain in the Civil War.  That’s all we have for information.   Based on this, keep in mind that their father died 1798.  That would make William Hogan’s age in the Civil War, if born maybe 1795, age 67 to 70 during the years 1862-1865.  This raises doubt, unless he served as a specialist such as carpenter.  Grant County scribes had trouble hand-writing “o” in Hogan, causing “Hagan” confusion.  That introduces a question of who exactly was being identified.    Tracing William Hogan after 1825 is a problem since his birth date estimation is uncertain.

Elihu Hogan (~1798? to 1860+ Texas) married 14 September1824 Garrard County, Kentucky to Isabella Roerty (county record).  Census records indicate he was born about the same time his father died.  Elihu Hogan was elected a House Representative and later Senator to the Kentucky General Assembly for 1843, 1850 and 1851 and possibly other years.   In 1850, he served standing committees on Privileges and Elections, on Religion, and on Education.  His 1850 census states he was into manufacturing, but details are missing.
