This edition 10 November 2022, James R. Murphy, planetmurphy.org

This chapter has the following Montgomery Co., VA Hogans:

(AAA).  Parent’s names for Philip Hogan are not known.  Reconstructed children and grandchildren are:

(Part-A). Philip Hogan (ca1760 to May 1825).  First six children migrated to early Indiana; mostly to Dearborn County, IN. along with the Pate (Payte) father-son families.  Children from 1st marriage 31 March 1787 Montgomery Co., VA to Elizabeth Pate (Payte) are:

(A-1). Christina Hogan (~1787/89 – 1860+) + Obadiah Howerton;

(A-2). David Hogan; (1787/1794 to 1820+) + Polly Barringer;

(A-3); Harman Hogan (1792-1864) + Peggy Elliott + Elizabeth Miles;

(A-4). Daniel Hogan (~1795-1850+) + Amelia _;

(A-5). James Hogan (1795/1804 – 1820+) + _;

(A-6). Joseph Hogan (~1804-1860+) + Drucilla _ + Mary or Martha Cannon.

(A-X). Susanna Hogan (~1785? to 1807/1814), “age 21,” married 1806 to “Adam Baringer” (Montgomery Co., VA record).   Not in 1825 Will and not in 1843 Lawsuit.  Likely an early daughter who died early without heirs.   Additional clue: David Hogan (1788/94 to ?) married 1813 Montgomery Co., VA to Polly Barringer (County Record), with Adam Barringer security.

Children of 2nd marriage about 1808 to Mary Stowers:

(A-7). Francis Hogan (male – 1809 - 1879) + Leah Phlegar;

(A-8).  Emanish Hogan / Emmah Hogan (~1811) + William Lasley;

(A-9).  Andrew Jackson Hogan (~1815-1870+) + Caroline _;

(A/10). Rebecca Hogan (~1817) + John Wilson.

(Part-B). James Hogan (born-?, died-?) “x”.   Birth date cannot be estimated at this time.   Aligned with Philip Hogan, but relationship to Philip Hogan is unknown.   Noted for a brief time in 1794-1795 Montgomery Co., VA.   Unable to trace him before or after these dates, but cannot rule out Richmond Co., VA where a James Hogan (ca 1769-1815) first appears in 1785-1789, goes missing for a few years and reappears 1796 next to his mother Ann, widow of Thomas Hogan (ca1735/40-1786).

(Part-C). (Unknown 1st name) Hogan + wife Nancy Hogan (“x”), who later married a Scaggs (Skaggs) at an unknown location.   Daughter Mary Hogan appears nearly the same time as James Hogan in a 1796 Montgomery Co., VA marriage.    No connections have been found to these other Hogans, so far.

(C-1) Mary Hogan (ca1778/80) – “daughter of Nancy Skaggs,” married 1796 to John Cassady.

Early Hogans in Montgomery Co., VA related to Philip Hogan (Part-B), (B-1), (B-2).

James Hogan, Mary Hogan, and Susanna Hogan

The following give clues which might help us find Philip Hogan’s origins.

1794 July 2 – Montgomery Co., VA Court (condensed & rewritten): James Hogan…bound here on a charge by Thomas Pate, who upon his oath claimed he the said Thomas was afraid the said James would take his life or do him some personal damage.  …It is the opinion of the court that the said James Hogan be bounded to the Sheriff until he gives two securities for his good behavior for the term of one year and one day, and he bind himself in the sum of $160 and his securities in the sum of $80 each, (financed) from each of their respective goods, chattels, lands, etc. (if he fails).  James Hogan, Philip Hogan and Adam Pate personally appeared and acknowledged themselves indebted to his excellency Henry Lee, Esq. Commonwealth Governor: $160 for James Hogan, and his securities $80 each for Philip Hogan and Adam Pate.  After one year and one day, this order be void.

1796 May 13 – Montgomery Co., VA: Marriage of Mary Hogans to John Cassaday.  Mother listed to be Nancy Scaggs (county record) and securities were Lewis Messinger and William Cassady (county record).

Why not name the father?   Was he deceased?  1795 Montgomery County taxes include Isaac Scaggs, Peter Scaggs, Solomon Scaggs and Joseph Scaggs. Earlier, there was a James Scaggs.  Joseph Scaggs continues later in these taxes; Solomon Scaggs in 1796.   Surname can also be spelled Skaggs.

Details for Philip Hogan in Montgomery County, Virginia (Part-A)

1787 March 31 – Montgomery Co., VA:  Marriage of Philip Hogan to Elizabeth Payte, daughter of Jeremiah Payte (county record).  Surname is correctly spelled Pate and possibly pronounced similar to “late.”

1787 to 1824 Montgomery Co, VA Personal Property Tax Records show Philip Hogan continuously.  Please note that Montgomery Co., VA tax records are missing for 1783-1786, with only 1782 available.   Although established in 1782, Montgomery County began its courts in January 1785.

Philip Hogan has up to 5 horses, and 8 cattle in 1815 (cattle almost never mentioned).   He has two white males ages 16 and up reported: 2 in 1815, 2 in 1820 & 1821 but many years taxes only included blacks age 12+ and horses and apparently no adult males age 16 and up.  Several Hogans are named next after his tax line - James Hogan in 1795, David Hogan in 1813, and Daniel Hogan in 1815.  James Hogan in 1795 is a problem because he appears too soon after Philip Hogan’s 1787 marriage.   He may be related or just a Irish friend with the same surname.   1825, 1826, 1827, taxes refer to Philip Hogan “Repo” or “Rept” – which is hard to read, but probably indicates his estate in probate.

1793 June 3 – Montgomery Co., VA Court: Hughs versus Farle case, Jury includes Philip Hogan.

Order Book 6, page 105, image 121/653.  This is the first time Philip Hogan appears in a Montgomery County order book.

Order Book 6, page 137, image 138/653.  Pate is correct spelling.  There are two Jerimiah Pates in this county, and it isn’t always apparent if he is Senior or Junior.

1793 October 1 – Montgomery Co., VA Court: “Ordered that Philip Hogan be appointed Constable in the room of Thomas Alley, who is discontinued from acting in that office.”

       Who is the male 16-25?  Likely is son Joseph Hogan, born ~1805.

1825 January 3 – Montgomery Co., VA:  A long rambling will of Philip Hogan, condensed/rewritten.  Bequeaths to my oldest son Francis of my second wife Polly, sixty-four “akers” of land beginning at a white oak on a ridge near a creek called the Vancelbank (??? blurred image) boundaries to a line of Thomas Bayers, a part of two grants, one bearing a date 25 _ 1789 to Edman Vancel and the other to said Phillip Hogans of 130 “akers” bearing the date 25 July 1797.  Also, to son Francis, a saddle and bridle, a feather bed and quilt, a rifle gun, and one three-year-old heifer…as soon as he arrives to the age of 21 years.    Bequeaths to youngest son Jackson a 20-acre tract of land where-in is my house, orchard, and buildings with all the furniture therein, and one young horse saddle and bridle when he arrives to age 21.  In addition, son Francis is to pay daughter Eminah $150 in 8 years from this date; daughter Rebeccah to be paid $150 by son Jackson in 14 years from this will’s date.    States wife Polly Hogans to have property until her youngest son becomes age 21 and 150 acres conveyed to him by Jerimiah Pate (likely 1st wife’s father), (with) said Francis Hickson being the last in possession.  Mentions servant Silva.  Also bequeaths daughter Eminem one featherbed, furniture, one cow and calf, one saddle and bridle; After wife Polly dies, money from personal property sale to go to children of all my first and second wives, if living.   (Will does not give first wife’s name or name of her children.)   William B.               The word “representatives” suggests James Hogan and David Hogan might be deceased and they have lost contact with them.

Children of Philip Hogan and 1st Wife Elizabeth Payte

(Names based on 1843 Lawsuit versus 1825 will, and most birth dates from census records)

(A-1).  Christina Hogan (~1787/89 – 1870+) married 13 February 1808 Montgomery Co., VA to Obadiah Howerton (County Record) (died 1829).  Also spelled Obediah Howerton.

1810 US Census of Montgomery Co., VA: Obediah Howerton – 1 male + 1 female 0-9, 1 male + 2 females 16-25.

1820 US Census of Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana:

James Hogan 1 female 0-9, 1 male + 1 female 16-25.

              Believe Elizabeth Gebhart (born ~1808) may be the daughter of Christina Howerton.  Christina’s age in this census should be younger; i.e., 82.  Christina could be the first child of Philip Hogan.

(A-2). David Hogan (1788/94 to ?) married 6 October 1813 Montgomery Co., VA to Polly Barringer, with Adam Barringer security (County Record).  Unable to trace after 1820.  Estimated David Hogan’s birth date: 1820 – 26/44 = 1776 to 1794.  Father married 31 March 1787.  Therefore, his birthdate ~1787 to 1794, but this relies on a single census record.  He is a good candidate to serve in the War of 1812/14, but where and with whom?  So far, researching early Indiana records does not find any Hogan’s serving during the War of 1812/14, but David Hogan is recorded with Dearborn County land in 1814.

               The SW quarter of Section 23 lies on the North Fork of Hogan River in today’s Dearborn Co. IN!  According to D. J. Lake, “Hogan Township - A part of what was originally Laughery Township, changed from Laughery to Hogan (Township) in June 1852, and so-called Hogan from Hogan Creek, which received its name from an early settler of the same name.”  Dearborn County is the most southeast county in this State and lies on the Ohio River.

              “Hogan Creek is supposed to have been named for two brothers by the name of Hogan who lost their lives in an engagement with the Indians at the mouth of that stream.”

Wikipedia, Hogan Creek, Indiana on-line

              Hogan Creek watershed serves the central part of Dearborn County and empties into the Ohio River.   The creek’s first settler was in 1797.  Question becomes – when did this creek take on the name of Hogan and was it named for any of our subjects?

1820 US Census of Town of Hardinsburgh, Dearborn Co., IN: David Hogan - 1 male + 1 female 0-9, 1 female 10-15, 2 males + 1 female 26-44.

              Notice the two males ages 26-44.  One is David Hogan, but who is the other male 26-44 and female 10-15?  Could he be brother Joseph Hogan with an incorrect age?   Hardinsburgh is within Township 5 Range 1 and is the southwest corner of both Dearborn County and State of Indiana (became a State in 1816).

Harmon Hogan / Harman Hogan (1792-1864) married 1st on 19 October 1813 Montgomery Co., VA to Peggy Elliott (County Record) and 2nd married 21 May 1823 Harrison Co., IN to Elizabeth Miles.    He was born 1792 and died 19 September 1864 Miles Cemetery, Warren Co., IL, per findagrave.com.  Children from census records and findagrave.com include: (A3-a) Sarah Hogan (1824 – 18 March 1841), (A3-b) James S. Hogan (~1826), (A3-c), Harbard Hogan (~1828), (A3-d) Mary E. Hogan (~1831), (A3-e) Susanna Hogan (~1832), (A3-f) Permillia Hogan (~1837).

(A-4). Daniel Hogan (~1795 to 1850+) married about 1816 to Amelia __ (~1800).  Some children of Daniel Hogan: (A4-a) Joseph Hogan (~1816 to ~1882), (A4-b) Jane Hogan (~1835), and possibly 1 male + 1 female born 1811-1820, 1 male + 3 females 1821-1830, names unknown.   Daniel Hogan migrated to Obion County, Tennessee with his son Joseph Hogan (~1820).

James Hogan 1 female 0-9, 1 male + 1 female 16-25.

Problem with researching Dearborn County, IN is that its courthouse burned down in 1826 with records lost.  The country later resurrected deed records with books AA, BB, and CC, but indexes do not show any Hogan deeds.   Index for Deed Book C, page 62 indicates a Danl. Hogan grantor deed to Charles Dawson grantee, not seen.  Details from this deed could indicate where he was living and if any other Hogans witnessed the deed.   Currently, a limited number court house records are available on-line.

1822 December 5 – Dearborn Co., IN:   Will of Eleazar Cole.   Wife, Hannah.  Sons, Eleazar, Israel, Harvey, Jonathan, John (deceased), Benjamin D., Veney Cole.   Veney Cole is probably a daughter.  Witnesses – John Lyons, Daniel Hogan.  Dated 5 December 1822; Probated 2 June 1823.
