Research problems: (1). Balther Stauss/Stouse’s relationship, if any, to John and George Stoess is not known.   However, all three show surname spellings that converge towards “Stouse.”   (2). Understanding changing boundaries of Northern Liberties Township and its borough is important. Wikipedia says it was absorbed by the City of Philadelphia in 1854, but some other records suggest some functions earlier. (3). Philadelphia German Lutheran record sometimes spell a name as Stoess(in) or even Stoessin.   The Stoessin “in” appears to be a female tag and why it is only used sometimes is not understood.   Lichtenau, Baden, Germany records are Licthtenau Lutheran Parish Records.

Part One – Johannes Stoess (1700 to >1764) – A Reconstruction

Spelling: Stoess, Stoss, a German “Stoss” with two dots over the “o,” and Stouse.  First name is also Hans Stoess.

Family records: none identified

Baptism date: 15 June 1700 Lichtenau Parish, Baden, German.  ~1700 date is from St. Michaels Lutheran Church, Philadelphia records.

Married Catherina Schoch, daughter of Michel Schoch on 17 February 1721 at Lichtenau, Baden, Germany (Parish Record).  Not known if wife came to America and her date of death is unknown.

Children: St. Michael’s Church record repeatedly records he had 4 children, but may have missed one who died young in Germany.   1797 Will of Jacob Stoss names sister Margaret Schock, and deceased sisters Christina Shaed/Schaed and Salome Gilbert.

Died: not known, but last living 1764, per church record

Parents: Father - George Stoss and mother – Barbara __, per parish record.

Immigrated 1752.

Brother is George Stoess (baptism 24 July 1707 to March 1780) who immigrated 1749; Also had brother Jacob Stoss (1702)

Comment about the surname of Stoess or Stoss: It’s extremely rare, but spelling variations conflict with nearly similar surnames; i.e. Suss, Stoltz, Staust, Strauss, Strous, Stoes, Stauch, and Stoh.  There is little room to use variant spelling while searching for these people.

A Reconstruction

Overview of Balthasar Stauss/Balthasar Stouse (1711 to 1782)

+ Anna Maria Bunter.

Balthasar Stauss (28 October 1711 to burial 11 August 1782 – church record) was a Deacon of the St. Michaels Lutheran Church, Philadelphia County, where he had many records.  His immigration record has not been found, but the year is ~1746 according the St. Michael’s Church – Philadelphia records.   He married about 1739 to Anna Maria Bunter (her burial 4 January 1780 per Phila. Ger. Luth. Church).   They lived in Northern Liberties.   Their earliest Philadelphia County church record was 16 August 1752 with the baptism of Jurg Henrich Horn and his wife Cathrina.

Relationship between Stauss and Stoess families, if any, is not known.  St. Michael’s records show no intermixing with the Stoess families.   His surname is recorded in St. Michael’s German Lutheran Church as Stauss but Stouse becomes more common in later years.  1780 and 1782 Northern Liberties (West) tax records, if correctly interpreted, Balter is George Stouse, Senior.  Next to him on both records is his son George Stouse, Junior – blacksmith.  Reason for “George, Senior” is not clear, as church records never refer to him as George (Balthasar) Stauss.  No family records have been identified.
